Wheelchair tennis

Young wheelchair tennis star Gordon reid won his fifth Men's Main Draw Consolation Singles title of 2007 on Sunday at the Nottingham Indoor Tournament. The 16-year-old was competng in the ITF2 Series event on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Reid's win was all the more impressive as he beat two World top 20 players for the first time in his young career en route to winning the Consolation event.

Reid came up against in-form World No. 23 Joachim Gerard of Belgium in his opening match last Wednesday at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre, Gerard earning a 6-4 6-2 victory. However, with Reid going forward to the consolation draw, he then powered past British No. 3 Alex Hewitt from Derbyshire 6-0 6-2, to book his place in the Consolation semi-finals.

Reid went on to gain his first ever win over a World top 20 opponent, defeating World No. 18 Laszlo Farkas of Hungary 6-2 6-7(6) 6-2, to earn his place in Sunday's Consolation Singles final against Japanese World No. 17 Yoshinobu Fujimoto.

Reid took a 3-1 lead in the first set against Fujimoto, but then had to come from 6-5 down to force a tie-break. Reid took a 5-1 lead in the tie-break and then withstood a comeback from the Japanese player to take it 7-5. The second set saw both players exchange games until 3-3, but Reid then went on to reel off three games in succession to seal victory 7-6(5) 6-3.

Sunday's victory follows four other Consolation Singles titles that Reid has won since the start of the Summer, two in the Netherlands, one in Italy, and one in Spain.

The Nottingham Indoor Tournament was Reid's final British-based event of 2007, and he will now bring the curtain down on a highly successful season with two tournaments in South Africa at the end of November and the beginning of December.

Gordon gets first main title

Image of Gordon in actionHelensburgh's young wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid won the first men's main draw doubles title of his career on Sunday.

He teamed up with fellow Birton Jayant Mistry to complete a superb four days at the Open de L'ile do Re in France, which included his being the first Briton to take a set off Mistry, the UK number one, since 1995.

Gordon, aged 15, who became Britain's youngest National Men's Singles Champion in May, combined with Mistry to upset top seeds Stephane Goudou of France and Gert Vos of Belgium 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in their opening doubles match on Thursday.

Later that day he defeated Frenchman Antoine Grelet 6-0 6-3 in his men's main singles first round match to set up a qurter-final against Mistry.

Despite having only taken up wheelchair tennis less than three years ago, the teenager showed his potential as he outplayed Mistry to take the first set of their quarter-final 6-1. However, Mistry's experience finally told as he came back to seal a 1-6 6-3 6-2 win, but he praised Gordon after the match, saying: "I'm very impressed with Gordon, he's got a bright future in the sport."

Later on Friday Reid and Mistry resumed their doubles challenge and defeated French duo Laurent Fischer and Lahcen Majdi 6-4 6-4 to earn their place in Sunday's final, against second seeds Laszlo Farkas of Hungary and Sebastien Husser of France.

The title decider proved Reid and Mistry's biggest challenge of the week as just one service break separated the two pairings in the first two sets. However, the final set came down to a tie-break, which the British partnership dominated to seal a 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-0) victory - Sunday's triumph was Gordon's first main draw doubles title. It was also the third international doubles title of his burgeoning career since making his debut on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour in 2005.

Next challenge for Gordon is the Cardiff Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in mid-October, where he is likely to start as one of the main contenders at the ITF Futures event.

Reid wins again

Helensburgh's young wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid won his third Men's Main Draw Consolation Singles title since August at the DHO Spanish Open, which came to a conclusion on Sunday in Madrid.

Gordon, who at 15 became Britain's youngest senior national men's singles champion in May, has had a series of tough first round draws against top players since the start of the summer.

His latest main draw first round opponent was world number 15, Piotr Jariszewski of Poland, who beat the promising young Scot 6-1 6-2, leaving Reid to try and win world ranking points through the Consolation Singles.

Reid, world ranked just outside the world's top 80 last week, went on to beat three other higher ranked players in the Consolation draw, overcoming New Zealand's Glenn Barnes 7-6 (5) 3-6 7-5 in his first match, and then defeating Mario Gatelli of Italy 6-1 6-3 in the semi-finals.

He finally powered past top seed and world number 50, Guiliermo Camusso of Argentina 6-0 6-2 to gain the maximum points available in the Consolation event.

This victory follows up similar wins in Utrecht, Holland and Livorno, Italy, and while he has spent the last month ranked just outside the world's top 80, it is expected that his Spanish success will herald a return to a place in the top 80.

Meanwhile, he waits anxiously in hope for a better draw this week when he competes in the Open be L'ile do Re in France, which is another ITF 3 Series event.

Italian Job

Gordon wins wheelchair tennis singles in Italy

Gordon Reid clinched his second title in a month at Citta di Livorno tournament. He won the Men's Main Draw Consolation Singles in Italy, as part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour after beating Konstantin Schmaeh of Switzerland.

15-year-old Gordon, who became Britain's youngest senior National Men's Singles Champion in May, lost out to Belgium's Mike Denayer in three sets in the first round of the Men's Main Draw Singles on Tuesday. But after that setback he was unbeatable in the Consolation event and eased to his third successive 6-0 6-0 of the week to win Friday's final.

August was a productive month for the teenager, starting with Gordon winning the Men's Main Draw Consolation Singles at the ITF 1 Series Daimler Chrysler Open in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

During the summer he has faced some tough first round draws and now looks set to climb at least 10 places in next week's world ranking published by the International Tennis Federation, to a position inside the world's top 80.

In the quarter-finals of the Men's Main Draw Doubles, Gordon and fellow British junior David Phillipson, from Nottinghamshire, had a narrow defeat. They were just edged out of the doubles tournament by the Italian fourth seed pairing of Mario Gatelli and Fabian Mazzei 6-4 7-6.

Treble for Kate

Image of the winners at this year's championships and their trophiesBoth Jamie McDonald and Katie Fulton held onto their singles titles on Saturday at Helensburgh Tennis Club's Championship Finals.

Katie was too strong for Naomi Burnett, who gave a great display in her first ladies final, appeared unthreatened by the reputation of the former Scottish internationalist and battled shot for shot with Katie. But in the end Katie's experience gave her the edge in the two sets to nil thriller.

Jamie was up against another finalist in the shape of 13-year-old Niall Hope, who became the Club's youngest ever senior open finalist. Following his elevation to the men's first team this season, Niall had high hopes of giving Jamie a run for his money and both players gave 100 per cent, but the experience and power of Jamie came through on the day as he wrapped up the match two sets to nil.

On court four, Alistair Hope and Bobby Kerr were battling each other for the coveted over-40s singles title, which was always going to be an exciting match as both players have very different playing styles. Super-fit Alistair prefers a baseline game and wears down his opponents, forcing them to make mistakes, while Bobby prefers an attacking game, rushing to the net at every opportunity to put the ball away for a winner.

Alistair took the first set with ease 6-2 but Bobby came back to take the second 6-3, and by the third set it was clear Alistair's fitness would be the deciding factor. Bobby simply ran out of steam and could only watch as Alistair hit winner after winner to take the title.

Bobby had some consolation as he partnered Stuart Whitelaw to take the men's doubles crown against Ian Parlane and Jamie McDonald.

In the ladies doubles Katie Fulton and Gay Black beat Denise Laverty and Rona Foster.

Katie made it three in a row as she teamed up with Alistair Hope to take the mixed doubles title against Ralph Ward and Gay Black.

Other results:

Over 40s mixed doubles - Karri Walters and Stephen Humphries beat Yolandi Threwhella and Ian Parlane two sets to one

Over 55 men's singles - Ralph Ward beat Mike Wright two sets to nil

Ladies over 40s doubles - Karri Walters and Carol Bews beat Gay Black and Rona Foster

Over 55 mixed doubles - Jill Fulton and Ralph Ward beat Elspeth MacLean and Mike Wright

Intermediate girls - Naomi Burnett beat sister Fiona in a thrilling match 6-3 7-5

As the Club gears up for the Autumn coaching session there are still a number of places available in red and orange classes on Saturday and Sunday mornings. These classes are ideal for youngsters aged from four years onwards and is a great way to introduce them to exercise and to meet new friends - call Ann Morison for details on 01436 673974.

Young aces

Picture of Ciaran and Fiona with their medalsHelensburgh Lawn Tennis Club played host to two West of Scotland junior tournaments last weekend.

In the Under-12 event on Saturday, the host club was represented by Ciaran Losh and Fiona Burnett and as expected both players dominated their groups, making for a mouth-watering final.

Fiona took the first set 4-2 by forcing Ciaran to make a number of errors with her deep ground-strokes, but Ciaran soon got his act together in the second set and won it 4-1, focing a champions tie-break to decide the match.

It was neck and neck all the way until Ciaran took the lead at 7-6 with a great cross court forehand drive, forcing Fiona into defence, and Ciaran finally took the tie break 10-6 to win the gold medal.

On Sunday, in the Under-9s, Euan Gibson Smith beat Strathgryffe's Alistair Robertson 4-3 4-3.

Tennis Takeover

Photo of players at the tournamentOn the week that Winbledon started, tennis mania has swept the town.

Every blade of grass and spare ground has seen people of all ages look out the tennis rackets, get the white gear on and take to the court.

But the Burgh has tennis all year round with two thriving tennis clubs and both have been very busy this month with various tournaments and events.

As the tennis world was focussing on whether Andy Murray would play at the Wimbledon Championships, four tennis clubs were raising money for good causes.

Players from Helensburgh, Craighelen, Cardross and Kirktonhill clubs were invited to play a fun tournament to raise cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Parklands School - £318.50 was raised and will be split between the two good causes.

The tournament is held annually in memory of the late Marie Dixon, a well loved player who died in 1995 and her son Eric travelled through from Edinburgh to present the prizes to winners Katie Fulton and Jonathon Hicks who narrowly beat Ian Parlen and Anne McKelvie in a nail-biting final.

Special thanks to to the players, catering helpers, raffle donations and buyers and Helensburgh LTC who provided the facilities.

Ladies third team mixed bag

Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club ladies third team have had a mixed bag of results so far this season.

In the first two matches they lost to Hillhead HSFP by 6-3 and 7-2 against Uplawmoor, although the feeling was that it was their blase court that had won.

However, they won the next two matches, 7-2 against Giffnock 4 and 6-3 over Busby, but there then followed yet another loss of 6-3 against Polloc - two matches remain, watch this space.

World Champion Gordon

The 2007 Invacare World Team Cup, the Davis and Fed Cups of wheelchair tennis, saw the Junior title won by the UK when Holland were beaten 3-0.

Charity tennis match

An annual charity tennis tournament takes place this weekend.

The district mixed doubles tournament in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care takes place on Saturday June 23 at Helensburgh Tennis Club, in memory of Marie Dixon - not only a top player and coach, but a good friend to many.

Although traditionally hosted by a different local club each year, due to the popularity of the event Helensburgh has agred to provide its seven courts and host it from now on. Officials from each of the clubs have also agreed to donate part of the money raised to a local cause, and this year Parklands School will benefit. Entry for the tournament, which starts at 1.30pm, is £5 and there will also be a raffle for which prizes can be dropped off on the day or given to any committee member.

Both the top gents and ladies teams were in action last week, with the men travelling to Glasgow, expecting one of the toughest matches of the season. Whitecraigs, one of Scotland's top sides, are currently lying third in the league and boast a formidable squad of players, while Helensburgh were at full strength for only the third time this season.

Steve Losh and Jamie McDonald got off to a flying start taking the first set 6-4. The second set went all the way to the tie break and it was lost on a net cord to the benefit of Whitecraigs. Steve and Jamie went on to take the third set without much trouble 6-3.

Bobby Kerr and Stuart Whitelaw. playing at second couple, took the first set 6-4 but lost the second 4-6. The pair played their best tennis of the season to take the deciding set 6-1.

Alan MacBeath and Niall Hope had the toughest match of the night, taking the first set 7-5. They just missed out on the second and had to really dig deep to secure the final set 7-5, and a 6-3 win for Helensburgh.

Meanwhile, the ladies continue their excellent run in the Premier League beating the David Lloyd Club 8-1, and with only 2 matches left they look like securing second spot in the division. However, this could all change if they beat league leaders Newlands in their next match - report next week.

Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club

The ladies firsts lead the senior teams at Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club at the half way stage of the summer league campaign.

They are currently second in the premier league behind arch -rivals Newlands with 6 wins out of seven matches. The one defeat was against Newlands. The two met up again at the weekend in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup at Suffolk Street.

Newlands led 2-1 after the first round and Helensburgh looked as though they could force the match into a deciding third round as they were one set all on each court. The heat of the afternoon didn't help any of the players but in the end the visitors had the edge and experience and Helensburgh finally succumbed to the inevitable.

In the gents league the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams are doing well enough to be sure of avoiding relegation with only the 4th struggling to find a victory this season.

Champion Reid

Wheelchair tennis sensation lifts title

Image of Gordon - best in BritainHelensburgh teenage tennis ace, Gordon Reid, became Britain's youngest ever National Wheelchair Tennis Champion on Monday when he won the Men's Main Draw Singles.

Gordon, aged 15, went into his first National Championships Main Draw Singles final against Kevin Plowman having lost both his previous matches against the experienced Yorkshireman.

However, he started well to earn to earn a 4-1 lead with his precision shots, only to see Plowman reduce the deficit to 4-3.

Nevertheless, after the players exchanged the next two games Reid held his next service game to take a one set lead.

The early exchanges in the second set were even, but Gordon found another gear to win four games in succession, opening up a 5-2 lead.

Despite then having his service broken by a resilient Plowman, Reid broke straight back to seal a famous 6-4 6-3 triumph and leave Plowman as runner-up for the third time in his career.

On the other hand the Helensburgh teenager, who was among the top 10 nominees for the 2006 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award, has become National Champion in only his third championships, having only taken up the sport in February 2005.

He said "I am delighted to have played some good tennis this week and to be taking two National titles back to Scotland. To be the youngest winner ever and to be Scotland's first main Draw National Champion ever is a great feeling. It's been a great four days and makes the long journey home a bit easier."

Since taking up wheelchair tennis Gordon has had a rapid rise towards the upper echelons of the sport and was third seed in the Championships.

This latest victory carries on a series of wins that started off at Preston when he lifted his first senior title on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

After that he won April's Glasgow Wheelchair Tennis Tournament for the second successive year, continuing the run of success he began in 2006.

His next major challenge is the 2007 National Wheelchair Tennis Chapionships alongside fellow Scots Ryan MacDonald, Peter Moore and Kevin Simpson, whom he trains alongside in the Glasgow Wheelchair Tennis Club, which meets at Scotstoun Leisure and Tennis Centre.

Mini marvels shine

Helensburgh Tennis Club's gents first team suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Titwood last week. It was a disappointing debut for 13 year old Niall Hope, who partnered Kevin Stephen at number three.

Niall's form recently in junior tournaments has been great and head coach Steve Losh, absent for the night's match, rewarded him with a permanent place in the men's first team.

There was better news for the second team, who hammered Esporta Milngavie 8-1.

More than 70 youngsters took part in the latest mini-tennis fun day and a big thank is due to the parents and helpers who came along to asist Ann Morison and Bobby Kerr.

The children were treated to a mixture of tennis-based games devised by head coach Steve Losh and medals for the winning team and runners-up. Next mini-tennis day is June 17th.

'Davis Cup' comes to Helensburgh Club

Picture of all the participants in the eventBirmingham wasn't the only venue resounding to whoops and cheers for the Davis Cup last weekend.

A junior version of the competition, equally competitive and just as exciting, took place at Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday.

Judy and Andy Murray had encouraged performance clubs around Britain to organise competitions for their juniors on the same weekend as Britain's match against the Netherlands, and Helensburgh rose to the challenge.

The clubs, Newlands, Craighelen, Western and Helensburgh fielded teams of four - three boys and one girl - and all the competitors played singles and doubles matches against each team.

A very welcome lunch of pizzas, sandwiches, biscuits and fruit re-feulled the players half-way through their six hour competition and at the end of the afternoon the scores couldn't have been tighter, with the overall result being determined by the last two matches.

Craighelen ran out the winners over Western in a tight doubles match, sealing third place for the local club, whilst Helensburgh enjoyed a comprehensive win over Newlands in their final doubles match, earning Helensburgh overall victory in the competition.

All the children were awarded signed Andy Murray memorabilia, presented by the sponsors of Helensburgh LTC Performance Squad - Alastair Hope, Raeburn Hope Solicitors, Hamish Andrew, Murray & Biggar Travel Agents and Paul Curry, Babcock Naval Services.

Picture of the winning Helensburgh teamThanks also must go to the helpers who did a wonderful job on the catering front, and to Steve Losh, HLTC's Head Coach, who organised the very successful, very enjoyable event.

Our pictures show the youngsters who took part above, while the winning Helensburgh team of Fiona Burnet, Ciaran Losh, Cameron Burt and Ross Kennedy are picture to the left.

Playing in the North West Challenge at Bamber Bridge, near Preston, the 15-year-old won the Men's Main Draw Singles at the world-ranked event.

Gordon, ranked 77 in the world and in only his second season at this level, opened with a 6-0 6-1 win over the experienced Birmingham player Mark Agar.

He then eased past current Great Britain number two, Alex Jewitt from Derbyshire, who was ranked some 30 places higher than him before the tournament, winning 6-1 6-3.

Second seed, Nottingham's David Phillipson, was Gordon's opponent in the final and he held off the Englishman's challenge in a hard-fought second set to win 6-1 7-5.

As a result of this victory, Gordon, who made the final ten of the BBC Young Sports Personality 2006, has jumped to number 60 in the world rankings.

The pair later teamed up to win the Boys Doubles and to cap off a magnificent weekend for the teenager, for good measure he won a Junior Singles Event by beating Louise Hunt 4-0 4-0.
