HELENSBURGH Tennis Club's Gordon Reid crashed out of the Swiss Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Geneva yesterday.
The British no.2 made a bright start to his final tournament before next week's British Open in Nottingham as he eased past a French opponent in the mens singles on Tuesday.
He beat Jean-Noel Joseph without dropping a game, and progressed to a second round match against Dutch second seed and world no.4 Maikel Scheffers. In an encouraging performance, 18-year-old Gordon was 5-3 up in the first set and 3-1 up in the second set before Scheffers finally sealed a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory.
On Wednesday Gordon and partner Marc McCarroll beat Patrick Grabit of France and Switzerland's Alireza Kabirlaleh 6-0, 6-1 to earn a quarter-final against Dutch second seeds Scheffers and Ronald Vink, but were unable to repeat their surprise win over the reigning Doubles Masters champions in May's World Team Cup. The Dutch duo progressed to the men's doubles semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
