HELENSBURGH Tennis Club's annual club championships were completed on Saturday with no major upsets for the favourites — and top honours going to Alastair Hope who walked off with three trophies.
Alastair took the over 40 mens singles title with a classy display against Hadden Smith. Hadden was playing with an injured ankle but he admitted he would have struggled against Alastair's powerful display even if he was fully fit.
THE area's budding tennis talent was on display last week at the annual Helensburgh and District Junior Restricted Championships held at Helensburgh Tennis Club.
In the boys events top honours went to Craighelen's Ross Birss who won the under 18 and the under 21 singles titles. He then teamed up with Jemma Bolton to take the mixed doubles title to make it three titles. Helensburgh's Fraser Fulton retained his under 12 singles title and the under 10's was won by Helensburgh's Gregor Chambers.
WORK on the new surfaces for the Helensburgh Tennis Club top courts (6 and 7) finished today.
So it is important that members start playing on them, as this help the new surfaces settle in.
Site clearance has still to take place. The skip and heavy machinery will be removed, and the majority of the material used for the temporary ramp will also go, which means the club will get back the parking space. A double gate is to be fitted there — hopefully in the next few days.
