Ladies vets in tough matches Featured

Written by Bobby Kerr

HELENSBURGH Tennis Club's 1st Ladies Vets team travelled away to Thorn Park recently and, after a very close contest, emerged with a 3-3 draw.

At first couple Karrie Walters and Ann Morison were disappointed to collect only one set, but the second pairing of Gay Black and Yolande Trewhella made up for it by collecting two sets in an extremely tight, marathon match lasting three hours and consisting of three tie break-sets.

At one set apiece there was everything to play for in the third set but Gay and Yolande's slightly more attacking play just enabled them to keep their noses in front and collect it 13-11 in the tie break!

The following week the team were away to Whitecraigs on their slow artificial clay courts. Karrie and Ann were in much stronger form than the previous week and ran out very convincing winners in all three sets for the loss of only one game.

Yolande and Gay seem to be making a habit of long matches this season and this one again was no exception. The home pair quickly won the first set but, having got to grips with the slower pace of the balls, Gay and Yolande won the second 6-4.

They then raced into a 3- 0 lead in the decider, only to be pegged back by a determined Whitecraigs pair who employed the drop shot to great effect and eventually wore down the visitors, winning the final set 7-5.

However the Helensburgh side emerged as 4-2 winners overall and now travel away again to Western for their final match.

The ladies 3rd team travelled to Glasgow’s west end to play Broomhill. Joanna Crumless and Sue Macrae hardly put a foot wrong in the first set winning it 6- 1. Broomhill came back to take the second set 6-2, but Joanna and Sue raised their game to take the third set 6-2.

Janette Howieson and Alison Fotheringham had a very tough match and clinched the opening set 7-5. Every game thereafter went to deuce with Janette and Alison losing out both remaining sets by the closest of margins 6-4, 6-4. So the final score was a 3-3 draw.
