About the Club

Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1884, and was chosen as both Tennis West of Scotland's and Tennis Scotland's Club of the Year in 2003/2004.

President Elspeth MacLean received the national award at a dinner in Edinburgh in March 2005, having already been presented with the West award at the West AGM in November 2004.

Nicola Malcolm, the West County Development Officer, has outlined the Club's outstanding achievements in 2003, in particular the launch of an innovative Mini-Tennis Club in March of that year. Nicola paid specific tribute to Head Coach Steve Losh and Coaching Convener Ann Morison, who have been instrumental in the great success of the programme.

Since launching the Mini-Tennis Club in 2003, the Club has recruited 115 members and has 161 children participating in weekly coaching programmes. Through this HLTC has been used as an example of good practice by the LTA in both their new Mini-Tennis video and Mini Tennis Manual.

The Club's development programme has been augmented by the creation of junior and adult performance squads under the tutelage of Head Coach Steve Losh.

HLTC has a current membership of around about 500 members and has several teams, competing at different levels in the West of Scotland leagues. There are 5 senior ladies teams, 4 senior gents teams, 4 ladies vet teams, 2 gents vet teams and 6 junior teams.

2005 saw both the gents and ladies first teams win Division 1 respectively, to be promoted to their respective Premier Divisions. The ladies 2nd also won promotion from Division 4a to Division 3. The Club teams also narrowly last in the finals of the Clydedale Cup and Calcutta Cup. However, the Club won the Insight Investment Inter-Club Challenge tennis tournament after a dramatic Scottish final in Edinburgh on Saturday September 17 2005, but then lost out to Birkdale Tennis Club in the North of Britain quarter-final.

Facilities

The Club boasts many facilities within its grounds. There are seven all-weather tennis courts, nos. 1-5 being located at the lower end of the grounds, and nos. 6 & 7 at the upper end.

All courts have floodlights. Please note that floodlight tokens can be bought from TG Allan's, the Ironmongers, in Helensburgh, at a cost of £3 per token.

The club also has two brand new Mini-Tennis courts which have been purpose built for the thriving Mini Tennis Club.

Play can take place daily between 9am and 10pm, unless coaching or club matches are taking place.

The main feature of the Club is the impressive Clubhouse, designed by local award-winning architect Lawrence Hill, an honorary member, which was opened in 1997 with assistance from the Lottery Sports Fund.

On the lower level, the Clubhouse has female and male changing rooms, both fitted with changing areas, lockers and showers.

There is also a Mini-Tennis room on the lower level, set aside for the junior members of the Club.

On the upper level of the Clubhouse there are two reception areas, one fitted with tables and chairs as seen on the right, one area suitable for functions. Both areas have televisions.

There is also a fully fitted kitchen and serving area upstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped with cooker, fridge freezer, microwave, china, cutlery, etc.

The Clubhouse has also seen more activity following the closure of the Clyde Centre. We now offer the use of our facilities to Helensburgh Photographic Club, the Civic Society, and the franco Scottish Society, with the income boosting club funds.
